Some sleep problems are immediately obvious to parents whereas others are not so obvious. Your child has a sleep problem if you can answer yes to any or all of the following questions:

  • Does your child have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep at night?

  • Does your child take short catnaps throughout the day?

  • Does your child appear overtired, irritable, or wound up during the day?

  • Does your child need to be held all of the time?

  • Does your child wake up in a bad mood?

  • Does your child reach developmental milestones later than average?

  • Does your child constantly rub his eyes, pull on his ears, and/or yawn?

  • Does your child fall asleep in the car or carriage almost every time you go out?

  • Does your child fight naps?

  • Does your child get less than the recommended amount of sleep for his/ her age?

If you have answered yes to three or more questions above, your child is suffering from a sleep problem. Because sleep problems can have very significant effects on your child’s health and behavior, it is very important that you as a parent take the next step in remedying the problem before it becomes an even bigger issue (or a lifelong issue).
